Dear Holly,
My daughter is 10 years old and in grade 4 French Immersion in a secular school. She is not in the Catholic School system because my husband and I wanted her to learn French which we could not teach her ourselves. We do not speak French but wanted to give her the opportunity that we never had. I'm a believer that religion starts at home anyway and that is something I could do. I teach her catechism every week at home, we try to live our faith and attend church weekly.
My question for you is what resources/books you would recommend to education her on puberty and the many changes that she will be experiencing these next few years. I could not find any recommendations on your website nor could I find anything at our local Catholic bookstore. The upcoming health unit at her secular school is generic, is not age appropriate for her and God is not in the picture at all. I know when I was a grade 5 student, we saw a sex education film at our Catholic school and there alot of information to process at one time and God was not mentioned at all. I'd like to make it easier for my daughter to handle the information, have a easier time with all the changes to come and how God fits into the picture. What would you recommend?
I do not personally use any particular program for my younger children, aside from Mummy or Daddy 'talks' as knowledge is needed. I usually wait until they enter our local highschool and then introduce them to Chris Evert's Theology of the Body program. I can get away with leaving it this late because we homeschool and my kids are just not exposed to anything that necessitates an earlier formal intervention. With your child in school however, I can see why you'd want to look at this earlier.
ReplyDeleteI have friends who highly recommend a program called "Turning the Titanic" which is a parent-resource (not for kids to read/view) which specifically discusses this.

I have not seen this program, so I leave it to you to judge it's helpfulness to you.
While they don't specifically deal with puberty, I really like the "All Things Girl" series of books. They are based on Theology of the Body. The book on modesty is particularly helpful- my daughter (age 10.5) told my son (age 8) that modesty is when you show respect for your body by how you dress- she got it from that book!
ReplyDeleteA great program outside the home is Family Honor (www.familyhonor.org) and there you can find out more about the program and if they are offering it in your area.
There is a WONDERFUL book I found on chcweb.com, a catholic home school website. I think it is called, Living the Joyful Mysteries of Life. It is too the point without being graphic, uses medical terminology and the scriptural equivalent. Most appealing to me was the parallel of the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary and the morality teachings including responsibility of both young men and young women not only for their own purity, but others as well.
