A "Sick-Day" Rule

Dear Holly,
First of all, let me say how much I appreciate your book and website--not only have you given structure to our days, but believe it or not you introduced me to the terms "rosary" and "chaplet". :) I was very ignorant, but oh how those two things have helped my prayer life.

My question is this: I know, in my bones, that we do much better when we stick to a rule. But invariably it seems like we get sick and the rule goes out the window. I've been thinking about how to make this stop happening (when we're sick we need structure more than ever!), and I'm wondering what you do?

I'm thinking about some sort of backup "sick rule" with pared-down housework/schoolwork etc. I have only two children under 3, but we do some pre-school stuff every day. I'm trying to prayerfully revise my rule, now that my son is not just walking but running; but this time I'd like to take sick days into account.

  1. Wonderful about your receiving spiritual sustenance from the rosary and the chaplet! That is truly great news!

Secondly, I agree 100% about devising a pared-down rule - a 'sick rule'. It is exactly the way to go... So that you know, on those days, the key things to be done will be - morning offering, change diapers, get kids meals, load dishwasher and wipe counter and try not to make a mess! Something along those lines....

What do I do when I am sick? Well, first of course, my kids are older now... But I usually rest more, do one session of prayer of my choice on that day, I may do only independent school work for the kids so that I don't have to teach, or set them up with an art project or reading, attend to meals being made and basic kitchen chores. I usually leave the laundry til the next day or until I am ready.

If my kids were little, I would probably have a special toy bin just for sick days (or two) and a couple of kid's religious shows (have you seen the great selection at Ignatius.com?) and I'd also have some more independent activities for the little ones - like a mouse house (put a blanket over the kitchen table and give them pillows and toys for their 'house' and serve snacks in there! - See my Holly's Helpers page for ideas for activities for little ones to aid you.)
