Overcoming Computer Distraction
Dear Holly and Others,
I struggle incredibly with the distraction of this computer. Most of the time I'm sure it's just pure laziness because I don't feel like I accomplish all that much on here, just lots of reading. I was wondering what others do to curb this distraction if they suffer from it as well. Sometimes I feel like the only thing I can do is just get rid of it and maybe that is what I should do. But my hubby would NEVER go for it (he is equally distracted I think in the evenings).

I have found that when something is taking over my life, it is because there is a need that I am not looking at. What need is the computer filling in your life? Is it helping to console loneliness, or boredom, or nothing else to do, or??? If you can determine why you are on it, it will help you conquer its power over you.
Meanhwile, as in all things, it seems to me that prayer to God for temperance in its regard is your best shot. Jesus will send you the grace you need to put it in its place, which will probably not mean it's removal, but it's proper use.
And on your side - what you can do - if you can begin to develop your rule which is your conscious working out of your daily duties as God desires you to live your life - and begin to implement it - this, with the strength that will come from God's grace, will help you conquer it. You will simply be too busy to use the computer to excess.
In the end, to me, it all boils down to adequate prayer time and sacraments and asking the Lord to set our hearts straight.
I put my television in an uncomfortable place to keep me from watching too much. It is in the chilly basement and sits down low where I can't really recline back on the couch and see the screen well. That way I watch only what I need: news, weather, Wheel of Fortune with the kids!, and then we leave to do something else. I'm tempted to sit in front of it all night after everyone goes to bed, or turn it on periodically throughout the day when I don't really need to. It isn't in a prominant place in the house and that really helps. We can bring it into the living room for special occasions (for example, we like to watch the World Series minus the terrible commercials).
I don't know if there is a less tempting location for your computer (if you have kids online it needs to be out where everyone can see whats going on), but it has sure worked for our television.
