No Time for Spouse

Dear Holly,
I'm having difficulty finding a regular time to give attention to my spouse. He is a busy doctor and busy coaching hockey, so evenings get too late. We do attend daily Mass often at 7:00 a.m. but then we have no alone time in the mornings. Also do you have any Catholic resources for helping us to learn to pray as a couple?

I appreciate your difficulty here - a doctor has a crazy schedule usually, not to mention adding hockey!

Perhaps the best thing would be to discuss directly with him when you and he will have quality couple time together. It really takes two to tango, so to speak, and it looks here like husband AND wife need to work out solutions.

As for praying together, Philip and I have found the Christian Book of Prayer (which is morning and evening prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours) to be especially helpful for married couples. I highly recommend it. You can find it on the web, no doubt. Also, a trip to discuss this with your parish priest might help too. Unfortunately, I know of no books which address this issue - MROL website visitors : any resources you can recommend?

My husband and I use the magazine Magnificat, which has morning and evening prayer as well as daily Mass readings. It even throws in brief reflections on the saints. http://magnificat.com/

May I suggest Catholic Familyland in Bloomindale, Ohio?
They host a Marriage weekend in April, and Family Fest
vacations in the summer, plus a "Totus Tuus" weekend
in the Fall. www.familyland.org, www.familyconsecration.org
They have modeled their spirituality on the spirituality of
Pope John Paul II, and the co-founders, Jerry and Gwen
Conniker, had eleven personal meetings with him.
Francis Cardinal Arinze attends and teaches at the first two
days of the third Family Fest every summer, and has for
the past 19 years. This is a wonderful opportunity for a
family to grow closer together in truth and love. The teen
program is fantastic!

Love in Our Lady,
Joanie h.
