Welcome to "Thoughts for Moms"

Dear Friends,

"Thoughts for Mom" is a special place to receive spiritual sustenance related to the vocation of motherhood. Here I will post various reflections — from popes, saints, and Catholic writers, to my thoughts and yours — to help us better live our mission as Moms, and to help us give our vocation the depth of meaning God intended it to have.
Once more, you and I both have something to share, so please join me in adding meditations and personal insights in the comments section under each post, or contacting me at holly@mothersruleoflife.com with your own reflection to add.

God Bless,
Holly Pierlot

Motherhood Dispels Illusion...

"Without external work, we could not know ourselves fully, for only in daily work do we have a perfect opportunity to observe ourselves; it is then indeed that we discover the good and evil in ourselves and see our merits and faults. Without active work it is usually very hard to know oneself, for there is a lot of hidden evil in us, covered over with apparent calm."

Stephan Cardinal Wyszynski, "All You Who Labor: Work and the Sanctification of Daily Life", New Hampshire, Sophia Institute Press, 1995, p113

An "Apostolate" of Holy Motherhood

"1. They must devote all their time, energy, and resources, including their very selves to the greater glory of God and the pursuit of the Divine Will in their lives
2. They must be consecrated to the Most Holy Mother under the title of "Mother of God"
3. They must seek to fulfill their daily duties , that is, as mothers and wives in an exemplary manner of holiness by pursuing the contemplative life in their homes."
from "The Apostolate of Holy Motherhood", Mariamante, Ohio, Riehle Foundation, 1991, p58

Mom's Holiness the Most Important Factor...

"The one thing most likely to induce the faithful to lead a really Christian life is precisely the virtue of the one charged with teaching it. On the other hand, his imperfections are almost infallible in turning people away from God... That is why the apostle ought more often to have the torch of good example in his hands than fine words upon his lips, and should be the first to excel in the practice of the virtues he preaches. A man whose mission it is to preach great things, says St Gregory, is, by that very fact, bound to perform them."
Dom J.B. Chautard, The Soul of the Apostolate, Kentucky, Abbey of Gethsemane, 1946, p115

The Thought-Emotion Connection

Emotions are a here-and-now response to thought. Think about it. If I am thinking good things, I feel good. If I am thinking bad things, I feel bad. A single thought, fleeting through the mind, can have a negative or positive emotional reaction. And this is why, in relation to emotional stress, we need to guard carefully our thoughts. We cannot control our emotions if we do not control our thoughts. It would be like examining a wound by studying the bandaid! Our emotions are like bandaids, masking the thought patterns underneath. We need to get to the root - and the root is what we 'think'.

St Paul talks about allowing the truth of God to renew our minds - because he knows the tremendous impact of thought upon our persons : thoughts provide us with positive energy or with discouragement; thoughts influence our will to choose good or avoid evil; thoughts lead us to feel good or bad.

About Neglecting Prayer

"Any neglect in our interior life because of too much work is reflected in the quality of our work, for the lack of personal virtue becomes visible in it, and that lack can bring all our acts to nothing... if one is to fulfill one's duties, one has to have the help of the Spirit of God, and... it is vital to rearrange one's occupations in such a way that it is never necessary to drop prayer..."

It's Worth the Trouble

"A person who wishes to succeed in anything, little matter what, must not mind or care for trouble. Trouble attends everything, and the man who is a slave of trouble is master of nothing. If a result is desirable, do not calculate the trouble unless it be to consider how to overcome it, but press strongly on, aim, work for the result, look to the end. If it is worth having, it is worth the trouble."
Cardinal Vaughan, in : "The Life of Cardinal Vaughan - Vol 1" by J.G. Snead-Cox, Herder 1910, p47
