Home Needs a Fix

Dear Holly,
My house is upside down. I am hoping though, to get things in order soon. We were just given a book case, so I hope to get my books and papers in order soon. Since I have a bad back, I have been on bedrest a lot lately, hence the disarray of my house. I have my office, game room, library, classroom, living room, and even my bedroom now. . . full of papers and books, spread out everywhere. I try to do schooling and lesson planning, from my bed, so now I have a mess here too.I'm pretty ashamed of it, and feel like I can't even get ahead now. With God's help and grace, I am trying to get in order, pile by pile. It's starting to look like I'm a pack rat, even though I'm really not, but books and papers, are easily taking over my house.

You know what I'd do in your situation right now? Wanting to see immediate results? I would get my children to go around to every room in the house and with baskets and bags, collect every single book and paper of any kind,on shelves, under beds, in closets, wherever! and move them all to the classroom in one single place. Then, I'd spend two days (or more) sorting and putting them in piles appropriately. I'd go get a few more bookshelves, and a filing cabinet and files and put everything in one spot . The remainder of your house would get the immediate face lift. Your kids could help sort the books according to category - that in itself is a science classification activity! :-)

Then I'd do the same thing with clothes - every article not in a bedroom, I'd put in the classroom and take a day to sort. Then I'd do the same thing with toys. I have often used this method - by clearing out every room of every toy - then I can sort them all together in a single location and put them away where they belong.

Then, I'd move into a 'room analysis' as mentioned in MROL and decide upon a permanent logical place for everything.

You can type Flylady in on your search engine and go to her webpage.
I heard Dr.Colleen Kelley Mast recommend this to people who need daily tips...and it's free.
I am learning to keep things organized myself...she uses cute acronyms:CHAOS stands for:
