Which Penance for Lent?
"Most of our mistakes in the matter of penance are caused by a tendency on our part to tell God what sacrifices He would like best. We give Him these things, and then are surprised to find that He has been asking for altogether different sacrifices. We have not been listening to what He has said; we are so sure that we know what He ought to want. Then He comes to us... and we are no longer in the mood to give..."

Instead of 'limiting' God this Lent, why don't we make it a practice to try to be more 'open' to Him. To surrender ourselves and our selfishness to Him... To think about what He wants at any given moment... To be attentive to the promptings of grace...
We will only be able to do this to the extent that our lives are conscious and in order. So as we work to bring order, or as we continue in the order we have already brought about with our rules, let's adopt the response of the Blessed Mother - "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; Be it done unto me according to Thy Word."
In this, we can give ourselves completely and flexibly, and let God show us what He would have us do, from hour to hour, from moment to moment...
