The 2nd P - Understanding Your Temperament (article)
In A Mother's Rule of Life , we talked about our 'Persons' holding a high priority in our lives - the health of our body and our soul and our psyche - and ways to ensure our real needs are being met. There were other things to consider too - like overcoming various obstacles to personal health, such as sin, emotional and psychological wounds, healing & deliverance, and the role of the intellect, will and emotions in our search for Christian freedom. Discussed also was the civil war that often occurs when we don't want to do what we know is best...
That we need to 'know ourselves' is obvious- we can never work on anything effectively unless we understand it. So self-knowledge holds a high priority in our lives, and it helps us personally, as well as helps our family and all those we come in contact with, to become the whole and healthy person we are called to be.
One way to assist us in understanding ourselves is to understand our 'temperaments' - which is our personal tendencies to react to life in certain emotional ways. We're talking about understanding our feelings and how they affect us and our decisions, and how they assist us by making life smooth and wonderful, or hamper us by making life hard and unbearable....

Catholic spirituality has always acknowledged the influence of 'temperament' on our spiritual lives. Our emotional reactions are something born into us; a definitive part of our natural personality; a tendency to react emotionally in a certain way. These normal reactions influence and affect the way we live life, the decisions we make, and whether or not we are happy in those decisions.
There are four basic temperamental types, although most of us are a combination. While nothing is set in stone and we can't hold to these types of classifications rigidly, a quick overview of the types is helpful to understanding ourselves and knowing how to tackle our weaknesses and cultivate our strengths.
The four types are: Choleric, Sanguine, Melancholic and Phlegmatic.
Choleric people are born leaders, passionate, confident and self-assured. They are often decisive, although somewhat impulsive, and once a goal is set, little will deter them from fulfilling it energetically. On the negative side, the choleric person often tends toward pride, lack of sympathy for others, aggressiveness, anger and rashness.
Sanguine people are vivacious optimists, cheerful and interested in everything. They are generally content with life and pleasant to be around, moderate in behavior and undertakings. On the other hand, sanguines can be flighty and fickle, lacking in initiative, easily swayed by good as well as evil, seeking play and pleasure.
Melancholic people's feelings run deep. They are naturally drawn to an interior life, often seeking solitude away from the din of others. They take their time coming to decisions and often have a deep sympathy for those who suffer. Some disadvantages for them is the tendency for morbid introspection and internal sadness. They can be gloomy, pessimistic, underconfident and easily hurt and discouraged.
Phlegmatic people have no great passions to contend with, and nothing seems to bother them much, nor fire them up. They are fairly indifferent to the ups and downs around them, which aids them in being self-composed and steady. Unfortunately, this lack of passion can be to their deteriment - as they often neglect duty, tend to laziness, and their lack of interest in anything leads to little accomplishment.
Now, each temperament has it's own benefits and disadvantages. But while we are born with these inclinations and reactions, they are just that -reactions. As human persons, we can do more than just react - we have intellect and will. We can study ourselves and decide which aspects of our person we want to cultivate, and which faults we want to weaken.
In other words, we can choose, we can learn to control ourselves, we can respond instead of react. And with grace helping us, we can overcome any obstacles our temperament poses to our living a healthy happy and holy life.
If you are interested in studying yourself and learning about your temperamental strengths and weaknesses - all so you can follow God's Will more closely in your life - I am going to refer you now to a website where you can download an excellent study guide put out by the Pallottine Fathers of Wisconsin. It's called "The Four Temperaments" by Fr. Conrad Hock. It can be found at:

Perhaps curling up a few evenings this week with a hot chocolate, reading it through and then going over the suggestions for working with your temperament might be a fruitful expenditure of time! God Bless - Holly
Our personalities are God's gift to us and our temperaments are God's gifts too. It is original sin which causes the weaknesses in our nature. But with the help of grace and our effort, "we can overcome!"
Let's not let anything discourage us from acheiving self-mastery over our faults!
In addition to the four temperments - Florence Littauer's Personality Plus was recommended by my Spiritual Guide (A trained lay Catholic) for help in understanding the temperments easier. In addition to being able to understand your own temperment and how it affects yourself, you can also glean understanding of the temperments of those around you and it helps to you to be able to accommodate or change tactics a bit easier. For example, I have a total sanguine for a daughter, but I know what motivates her to do her work - lots of praise and little "surprises" or treats. Treats aren't always things, but can be chosing a story or helping mom with dinner.
