Not Enough Time for Homeschooling

Dear Holly
I am still working my way through A Mother's Rule of Life, but am wondering where you squeeze in school? We use a standard packaged curriculum and your time frames don't seem like enough time to do all the work. I still feel I don't have enough time for everything.

Personally, I homeschool Mon-Fri 9am-12noon, and Mon, Tue, Thurs 1pm-3pm. I used to let the lesson content determine how much time we spent, but found that it could take forever! So instead, when I created my rule, I set a time limit to 'formal' schooling. During this time, I do nothing else except pay attention to the children - no tidy up, no sewing, no nothing. If I can not accomplish my 'plans' in that much time every day, then I consider my plans unrealistic! This is what classroom teachers do.

We have many responsibilities to juggle - we must allot a balanced amount of time to accomplish them, with all things being done in moderation. Determine what is reasonable and essential based on the objective curriculum, but also consider the very real needs of yourself, your children and their personalities.

Remember also that standard curriculum has a lot of 'busy work' built into it - not all is necessary. Most textbook assignments are "ways" for how the child can learn something - there are other, simpler, less time consuming 'ways' to learn, even though you use the same content...
