The Need of a Mother's Rule
"Do not say that a rule of life is possible for a religious, but impossible for the mother of a family. This is an error! Every woman, whatever her lot in life, and whatever her obligations, ought to have a rule of life. Of course, the rule of a religious will be less open to modification.... Nevertheless, you must have a rule, otherwise your life will be squandered in a thousand follies and futilities."
Rev. P Lejeune, "Counsels of Perfection for Christian Mothers" (reprint) Colorado, Roman Catholic Books, (1913) p 36

Mothers of long ago often has plans for their days - Tuesday was laundry and ironing; Wednesday was dusting and sweeping; Friday was groceries and meal plans. My mother, who worked outside of the home, had her routines as well- market on Saturday morning; kitchen wash down Friday nights; laundry right after supper.
When I began my mothering, I believe I had been influenced too much by current ideologies which had diminished the importance of my vocation and left me ignorant of the most basic home-care practices. Many Moms I knew had no 'plan' for getting housework done either. Call it a culture thing.
So a rule is both reasonable and necessary for us. Not only to get our practical work done, but most especially as a way to get closer to God in this age of apostasy and atheism. There is nothing about a rule of life which is impossible, nor 'aiming too high'. It's after we have started a rule that this becomes very clear, and we wonder why we didn't think of it before...
