My Home is a Disaster - Need an Attack Plan

Dear Holly
My home is such a disaster right now! How long does it take to organize enough to get the flow going? My laundry has no more walking space due to dirty clothes, out of season clothes, give away clothes, etc! It's going to take me a long time just to get that done. Should I stop homeschooling for a few weeks, get things in order, and then start again?

I have always found that my Mother's Rule helps me maintain order, but that it has to have some order to maintain in the first place! However,I think the method depends upon your personality.

This fall, when I increased my school schedule in the afternoons, I lost time when I would have done certain housework. Those first two Saturdays then, I found myself with piles of chores. I knew I couldn't spend Saturdays doing housework.

So, I stopped everything for a week, and purged the house from top to bottom - limiting the children's clothes to so many outfits, clearing out books, toys, furniture, junk, tapes (you name it) that we hadn't used in a long time, making space for everything we do use. The kids and I worked straight for a solid week, and I just kept a running list of things to do as I went along.

We got it all done by the end of that week; all felt a sense of accompishment; and we picked up our school schedule in full the following Monday. That's what works best for me.

I'm just getting started on organizing my house, but I was having "housework-block" until I asked my husband if he could "take-over" the laundry for a month. I was so grateful when he said "yes." I feel like after I get the house on a routine, I can figure out how to tackle the laundry.
